Scanning False Barcodes in Fort Myers: What Are the Consequences?

LadyJustice

Shoplifting has evolved considerably throughout the years, and people are constantly developing new methods for this type of theft. Self-checkout aisles allow people to pay for their items without human interaction, and this presents certain opportunities for shoplifters. A recent case in Florida involved a woman using a false barcode to circumvent a self-checkout aisle at Target. What are the consequences of this type of shoplifting in Fort Myers?

Tik-Tok Influencer Caught Using False Barcode

In November of 2024, it was reported that a 22-year-old Tik-Tok influencer had been arrested on shoplifting charges near Fort Myers, having used a “fake barcode” to walk out of a Target location without paying for several items. This influencer has a considerable following, and she reportedly earns a high income through her social media activities. It is not clear why she attempted to shoplift despite her financial security.

Inevitably, many of the woman’s Tik-Tok videos have come under scrutiny since her arrest. In one video, she brags about her high income – claiming that she earns her boyfriend’s annual income in a single month.

The woman’s shoplifting strategy was more complex than simply walking out of the store – but it was still relatively straightforward. Reports seem to indicate that she took price tags from cheaper items and scanned those instead of more expensive items she had selected. This allowed her to take more than $500 worth of goods, according to the police.

As a vlogger, this defendant seems to have filmed most of her waking moments – and this may prove to be a notable challenge from a legal perspective. When conducting their investigation, police matched her most recent blog to security footage at Target – noticing that she was wearing the same clothing in both videos.

The woman also filmed herself picking out some of the items that she would eventually shoplift, creating a plethora of self-incriminating evidence in the process. She was charged with one count of petty theft and was released on bond.

If nothing else, this story serves as a warning for anyone who uses social media to document their daily experiences. This footage may be used against you in court, and police can access it with relative ease. It also highlights the negative reputational consequences of criminal charges for high-profile influencers – and the need for effective legal representation.
