Numerous Children Implicated in Florida Swatting Offenses

Juvenile

Authorities in Florida are cracking down on swatting like never before. Within the past few weeks and months, numerous defendants – including children – have faced consequences for this offense, which involves calling in fake bomb or hostage threats so that victims receive visits from SWAT teams. If you are one of the many people currently facing allegations of swatting in Fort Myers, consider getting in touch with an experienced criminal defense attorney.

California Teen Extradited to Florida for Swatting Charges

Earlier in 2024, a teenager from California was extradited to Florida on swatting charges. Authorities claimed that he was responsible for hundreds of swatting incidents throughout the entire country. The 17-year-old arrived in Seminole to face three felonies in connection with the swatting of a local mosque. After calling the police, he allegedly played audio of gunfire and warned police that there were explosives in the mosque.

11-Year-Old Charged With Swatting Florida Schools

Later in 2024, an 11-year-old boy faced similar charges for swatting various schools in Florida. The boy lives in Virginia, and he was charged and detained for calling in over 20 fake bomb and shooting threats. The swatting incidents targeted schools and other locations in Florida – and he also targeted places in Nebraska, Kansas, Alabama, Tennessee, and Alaska. It is not clear what kind of consequences the boy will face due to his young age, but authorities will likely attempt to set an example.

Canadian Man Pleads Guilty to Swatting Florida School

In July of 2024, a Canadian man in his early 20s pleaded guilty to swatting another school in central Florida. During his call to police in Marion County, he claimed to be a school shooter at a middle school in Dunnellon. He told deputies that he felt suicidal, and that he had a child in his gun sights. Police and tactical units “flooded the area” but quickly realized it was a hoax.

Eventually, the defendant was taken into custody – and more details emerged. The defendant allegedly targeted the school in Florida because his ex-girlfriend was a student there. However, investigators later determined that this girl was just 13 years old, and she had been talking to the defendant on Snapchat. The two had never actually met, and the defendant has been accused of threatening to “swat her school” if she didn’t agree to go on a date.
