The Importance of Your Appearance During a Criminal Trial in Fort Myers

Courtroom2

At first, your appearance may seem like an extremely minor detail in your overall defense strategy. However, it is important to remember that your fate will likely be decided by a jury of your peers. These are average Fort Myers residents – people who may take first impressions very seriously. It could be easier than you realize to influence their final decision with a few minor adjustments to your appearance. You can discuss this unique strategy in more detail with your criminal defense lawyer in Fort Myers.

Fort Myers Defendant Makes Drastic Changes to His Appearance

In June of 2024, it was reported that a defendant in Fort Myers had been given the permission to not only wear a suit during his criminal trial, but also put makeup over his tattoos. His attorneys fought hard for this right, and it is not difficult to see why. When the defendant was initially arrested in 2019, he sported only a neck tattoo. When he made a court appearance later that year, however, he had a new swastika tattooed across the side of his shaven head.

However, he then grew out his hair – covering the swastika before a more recent mugshot in 2023. In 2024, his appearance shifted once again – and this time he appeared in court with several new tattoos – including a small swastika under his left eye and a set of ink stitches around his mouth.

His attorneys obviously wanted to cover up his tattoos before jury selection. However, these attempts were only somewhat successful. The makeup did not cover up all of his facial tattoos, with the defendant only focusing on concealing his swastika. This is understandable, as almost any juror would react badly to this symbol.

Is a Suit and Tie Really That Important?

Your appearance does matter in a criminal trial. While a suit might not be required by law, most criminal defense lawyers will recommend that you wear one. In the aforementioned case, the defendant’s attorneys gave him a light blue suit with a striped shirt and colorful tie. This may have been an attempt to paint his extreme face tattoos in a more playful light.

For women, most defense attorneys recommend against wearing clothing that is overly trendy or revealing. Generally speaking, a modest look is best. Remember, first impressions are very important in criminal trials. According to one study, it takes a tenth of a second for someone to make a first impression. In other words, jurors might decide how they feel about you before anyone even opens their mouth during the trial.
